Extended Tropes

There are three main tropes with in music these are:
  • Trope maker-which is the initial inspiration and reason for the trope.
  • Subverted Trope-This is where it goes against the original trope and attacks it.
  • Inverted trope-Does the opposite of the trope.
-A trope that is a good example are songs about the DJ and how they want him to keep playing music. The trope maker of this 'Having a Party' by Sam Cooke he was the first to mention DJ in his song he says:
"So listen Mr DJ keep those records playing".

-After this the trope was heard in the song Panic by The Smiths, however in this song the trope was heavily subverted as it attacked the trope containing lyrics saying:
"Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ"

-An inverted trope example is 'Don't play that song again' by Nicki French in this song we hear the words:
"Oh DJ please don't play, don't play that song again."
This goes against the original trope as it is doing the opposite, instead of asking to keep the music playing she is asking to stop.

-'Re-Rewind' by Artful Dodger Selecta is a Jamaican term for DJ and Bo is an expression for approval for youth. Part of the song says:
"The Crowd says Bo Selecta"
And so therefore Bo Selecta means "Mr DJ, play the record again if everyone says they like it"

-'Play' by Jennifer Lopez uses lyrics which contain DJ and then later in the song repeats it including a profanity:
"Play/come on DJ/Play that song"

'Please Don't Stop The Music' and 'Pon De Replay' by Rihanna. In 'Pon De Replay' she featured one of the most politest versions of the original trope with the line:
'Hey Mr DJ, won't you turn the music up'
